Hip pain and discomfort is extremely common, approximately 1 in 4 individuals will require some sort of treatment in their lifetime.
The source of hip pain varies, but frequent causes include:
- Cartilage tears
There are a variety of treatment options for pain relief including anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy, or walking supports. You may consider treatment options when:
- Pain limits everyday activities, such as walking or bending
- Hip pain continues while resting, either day or night
- Stiffness in a hip that limits the ability to move or lift the leg
Same-Day Surgical Treatment Options
A total hip replacement is an option that involves replacing both the ball and socket of the hip. Traditionally, hip replacement surgery required a multiple day hospital stay. However, advancements in implant technology, surgical technique and pain management now allow many patients same-day surgery and the benefits it provides.
Oregon Surgical Institute was built to accommodate complex, same-day surgeries including total knee, shoulder, and hip surgeries.
Another treatment would be a minimally invasive surgery called hip arthroscopy. Hip arthroscopy may relieve painful symptoms of arthritis and other issues that damage the labrum, articular cartilage, or other soft tissues surrounding the joint.
Hip resurfacing, another treatment option, is an alternative for younger more active patients. Unlike traditional hip replacement, hip resurfacing doesn’t completely replace the “ball” of the hip with a metal or ceramic ball. The bone is reshaped and capped with a metal prosthesis and the hip socket is fitted with a metal cup.
